Isn't It Ironic
“Isn’t it ironic” is the refrain blared by Alanis Morrisette who had a pretty long run at the top of the pop charts. Isn’t it ironic indeed that a Canadian would pen and croon these words as our president now talks about making Canada our 51st state. I have remarked before that the two youngest generations seem to have this obsession with labels. This includes every twist and turn in history, age group, language and behavior. I find it stultifying and redundant and not helpful to anyone. There can be no such thing as post irony. That phrase in itself is ironic. What is wrong with everyone? It’s like there is a Wizard of Oz or more likely a sprawling secret organization like C.H.A.O.S. from the 1970s TV show, Get Smart , that furtively flits about creating false realities and twisting our minds into believing false narratives and thinking in a way that is purely self destructive and selfish. Except, of course, THERE IS a dark, sprawling organization that thrives on chaos but it’s not a secret and for the time being, anyway, it’s known as The Republican Party or MAGA. Irony is another way to get at the truth. Irony can reveal a different angle of the truth. Or is this “post irony” more of a way of being able to lie and then take it back by saying I was just joking or I didn’t really mean that. It’s for cowards. Either you are sincere or you are not. Either something is ironic or it is not. Fuck this post irony bullshit. Just like I hear some young people saying empathy is not real or should not be a part of what it means to be human. Also disgusting. Selfishness reigns supreme.
